Chapter 7 - Development a Draft

Go to page 197.  Read the "Developing a Draft" and rank the suggested revision methods 1 through 4. 1 being the most important for your work. 4 being the least important to your work.

In the comments section, identify the development technique that is most important to your work.  Make sure to include why you believe it is the most important to your work.  This answer may be rooted in genre (poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, drama).

Comments

  1. I tend to identify most with the first one. Each time I sit to write, it is almost always about a memory from my life or a very important event in my life. I feel as though it is a way to express myself and tell my story.

  2. 1. The first bullet point

    ReplyDelete
  3. For me the most important for forming a draft is is the sound and rhythm being number 1, 2 being a strong setting for characters, 3 dialogue, and 4 memories.

    ReplyDelete
  4. 1. memoir: writing out a memory or event
    2. play: characters who confront eachother
    3. Short story: characters engage in action and dialogue
    4. poem: sound and rhythm of language

A memoir would be most important to how I write as I am the most connected with that kind of writing, I really enjoy writing about my personal experiences and telling a story based on that.

    ReplyDelete
  5. The one I put as most important is the first one because I feel as though memories and events are really important to write about. I also write a lot of stuff on memories and events rather than poems or a play. I have more strengths in this type of writing than I do in the other writings.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Number 1 is the most important to my work because most of my pieces are based on a memory and or former event. Ranking all of them together my order would be 1,2,4,3. My writing isn't going towards the direction of a poem or play. I think my writing is more of a personal essay or a short story.

    ReplyDelete
  7. 1- conflict
    2- rhythm
    3- setting
    4- memory or event

Conflict is most important because if the story doesnt have conflict then I feel it isnt interesting. If there isnt conflict I feel there is no pull to the plot

  8. Journal entries because I tend to find myself writing a lot of fiction and what I have written for this class already has those elements. I find myself making stories in my head based on scenarios and then I put them in writing. When expressing passions in a different form with other characters, I get to live through it and it’s even more special. Basically living in fiction.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Writing about a memory or an event is the most important to me. This is the most important to my work because most of the things that I write about stem from my past memories or past events in my life. I use these memories and events to get the ball rolling with my writing.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think personally that the first aspect is most important to my writing. I find it appealing to illustrate past events in my life and analyze them from a more profound point of view. I think that it helps me relate to people, also it helps me understand and place my thoughts and opinions into words. I personally find it important to share my past with mental health because I know many people struggle with it and I never want anyone to feel alone in that struggle. Feeling alone and isolation contributes to the worsening of it. In conclusion, I think my writing strong suit is writing about my personal situations and relating to others.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I ranked the one about a memory first. I feel that if you start a passage with a memory it will open up the background of a story as well as create a hook for the readers to be pulled into. By starting with a memory, you open up ideas and questions that can be asked or explained by the readers. Then the author can answer the questions and enhance the ideas later on in the story. I feel that setting would come next. I feel that a good story always has a descriptive setting as well as a goof opening description. In order for the story to be interesting, at least for me, you need a good setting and a good opening topic to "kick off" the story.

    ReplyDelete
  12. the one that is most important to my work is the third one ("if the sound and rhythm of the language seem integral to the thought..."). This is the most important to my work because I write things that I want to be pleasing to the ear and to the flow of language. I write prose and poetry, if the sound of the language or the imagery of the words isn't coherent or doesn't sound like it should to flow the best, then I need to change that and to change that is to switch up the whole point of the piece.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1. If you wrote a memory or an event...perhaps a memoir or personal essay is in the works.

I think that it is important to know when you should start writing your experiences down as a full piece of work. I often write about little details of my life or my feelings, but I usually include another character and then make it his or her story. What I really should be doing is drafting my thoughts and feelings into a personal story. To me, there is a very blurry line between who I am, and who the characters I make up are. I need to instead just be writing down me as me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I relate to the first one the most. My writing is mainly non-fiction, such as, a personal essay. Those to me comes the easiest to write and I enjoy writing those. It also explain who I am as a person.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I chose the first bullet point as my number 1 because I have noticed that when I try to write dialogue between character I tend to run out of words quicker than a personal essay.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The development technique most important to my work is #3, the technique associated with poetry. I resonated heavily with the images being dense and urgent and the sound/rhythm being integral to the thought, I do not want to simply convey a message but I want it to sound and feel a particular way.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1. Personal Essay (memories, creative nonfiction)
    2. Playwriting (characters engage through dialogue)
    3. Short Story (strong setting with characters and their internal thoughts)
    4. Poem formation (analyzing rhythm and sound)

I ranked Personal Essay as my highest suggestion because of the nature of what I write. I tend to write nonfiction and pull greatly from my own life stories and memories. I like creating fictional characters and thinking of made-up stories, but at the end of the day, I usually will just rephrase my own life with my own memories embedded into the plot.

    ReplyDelete
  18. My #1 would be “if you wrote of a memory……” to me this one is the most important, tying a story to a memory or event, it helps the listeners to open their imagination and also helps the storyline with some more information that helps the readers understand better- helps with visualization and a better thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1. Personal essay: Writing out a memory or event
    2. Short story: Characters who engage with each other
    3. Play: Characters who confront each other in dialogue
    4. Poem: Sound and rhythm of language

I believe the memoir would be most important to my writing because that’s what I enjoy writing about most think its important to write about personal things because that what I am most aware and ineretsted about.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1. Sound and rhythm- rhythm and sound is most important to me because for me i need the assurance that my writing sounds right and has flow.
    2. Memory- I use reflection in my writing depending on what I’m writing about. While I may not make it obvious, I tend to use memory/reflection in my writing often.
    3. Strong setting- Setting is important but not absolutely necessary to write a draft.
    4. characters- I hardly use characters because I have a hard time creating them.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1-conflict
    2- memory or event
    3-rhythm
    4- setting
conflict is important because it carries the story along. It sets awareness to th problem and characters have to find a solution.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Personally, the developmental technique that is most important to my work is the first technique about creative nonfiction. This is the most important to my way of writing because I like to write about past experiences. It is a lot easier for me to write about things I have been through myself because I have my own thoughts and feelings to reflect on and write about.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think that writing something with a reflection and bringing in ideas that matter to me and putting it in the writing is what best suits me. My favorite writings were always about my life and my past life experiences that changed me. I’ve had a lot of traumatic and enjoyable events that I want to jot down so I can look back. It’s either a lesson learned for me to never do again, or find more of myself and what I think life is worth living for. I like to make sure I don’t forget any important details that were important in that situation in the moment, so building up those details is important to me. The more details I bring to the story, it’ll make it more lively and easier to reflect.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Writing of a memory or event that has a point and using ideas that matter to me are the most important to my work. My favorite pieces I have written are about things important to me or things I find interesting and matter to me. This makes writing fun and I let my mind take over instead of dreading the piece. This lets me flow with the piece and put love into making it, instead of just doing it because I must.

    ReplyDelete
  25. My development in technique that is most important is the second one. I believe that in any genre it is easy to brainstorm and right on a story created, and have a before conflict, during conflict, and after conflict. Then it would be most important to work on the the last one because you need to work on the conflict you created between the characters and how they develop that conflict. Then it would be important to work on the language within the story which is the third one. This is important because if the story does not have imagery, language, and sound then it wont be worth the draft. Lastly, you could do the first one to do a draft because it would be helpful to incorporate personal ideas and stories into your draft.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. personal essay or memoir
    2. poem
    3. short story
    4. play
I like memoirs and poems because I feel I connect most with them in my writing style. for me they flow out more easily and I feel my best work is either of these categories.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1) Personal Essay 2) Play 3) Short Story 4) Poem
The most important developmental technique to me is a memoir or personal essay because of how I am able to develop something from a memory or events that makes my writing speak about a point or reflection. I think it makes my writing more of my own where I can use more of a personal connection versus the other techniques

    ReplyDelete
  28. In my own writing, I would relate most to the first suggestion. I find it easy for me to display my thoughts through personal essays or events that I have entailed before. Normally a memory that will lead into a reflection of what happened. I find that once I start to write my ideas tend to spill on to the paper are reflections of my true thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think that the one about memory would be the best for me because I think it is a better way to draw in my readers. I always get drawn in when someone talks about a particular story from their past and I think it is also a better way for me to relate to other people.

  31. My #1 personal revision method is “If you wrote a memory or an event that seems to you to contain a point or to lead towards reflection, if you came up with ideas that mattered to you and that you wanted both to illustrate and to state, then you probably have creative nonfiction, perhaps a memoir or personal essay in the works.” This one seems the most like me because I have always been a creative writer and I love writing stories no matter fiction or nonfiction. I do love writing about personal nonfiction experiences because I am the one experiencing them and I feel the most connected and comfortable in my writing that way. Memories are something that I truly love to capture within my writing because memories are what makes me who I am today and are what will shape me into the person that I become in the future. Overall, I feel like this is the development technique that suites me the best.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1. conflict
    2.idea/ rhythm
    3. setting
    4. memory

The reason why i put conflict is the most important to my work because in my life I have experienced many different ways of conflict and in order for me to relate to a story or even want to get myself involved in a story it has to have some conflict, because things that just go perfect and aren’t so interesting to write about, but i dont like to write about them negatively, I just like to talk through the experience of the different situations that i have been through.

    1. A style of writing that I really like is groups of people going through conflicts as well as getting over obstacles, ex like lord of the flies, outsiders

      Delete
  33. Personally, the first bullet point is most important to my writing because I find that I can be very reflective upon ideas that matter to me, and building upon those ideas can be very therapeutic. Then my ranking would continue with 3, 4, then 2. I am not one for short stories; I like to build upon narratives. I enjoy describing imagery, and I value confrontation but not as much.

    ReplyDelete
  34. In my writing I lack on the setting and the sound and rhythm of my stories. I feel that writing about a memory is the easiest because it has already happened and you have lived in the moment so writing about something that is more personal and emotional is easier in my writing.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1. 2, as i often create the setting and environment for some kind of action first when i create.
    2. 3 as I often think of a specific string of words or concepts I wish to string together, a subtle way to say too much
    3. 1 I don’t like talking, and i especially dont like writing about my self, but I do enjoy writing essays applying my topsy turvy philosophy concealed in a bizarre arrogant hubris
    4. 4, personal betrayal is not something i romanticize or idealize, the way logic is thrown out the window for dramatic treason is ridiculous, and id rather be lobotomized then write that

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1. Conflict
    2. Confrontation
    3. Tone
    4. Setting

Conflict is usually the base of the story. The tone is based around what they may be arguing, and the confrontation matters on how important the conflict is. The setting is important, but most problems could occur just about anywhere.

  37. 1.) Writing a Personal Essay- I like writing essays to give my own experience and thoughts on topics
    2.) Short Story
    3.) Play
    4.)Poem

    ReplyDelete
  38. 1. memoir
    2. play
    3. Short story
    4. poem
I would rank them in order: 1,3,4,2 with number one being a memoir because it is easiest and most beneficial for me to write something personal that comes from a memory or specific event in my life. However, I also think I could turn a personal event into any of the forms of writing listed above, a short story and then a poem would be the next most important to me and then and play being the least important to me since I am the least experienced with writing plays.

  39. Rankings;
    1. short story/ fiction
    2. Memoir/non fiction
    3. Poetry
    4. play/drama
I ranked the short story development as the most important to me. In these stories, where the focus falls on the characters and the conflict of their actions, you get the most, and clearest depth. Poetry might hold the most depth overall, but poetry can be interpreted in hundreds of different ways. In short stories, it's more direct. The author is showing a clearer picture, making the characters and situations more relatable to the reader. In these situations you don't have to get caught up convoluted metaphors or phrases to find meaning, meaning and depth can be hidden in plain sight. Forcing your readers to pay attention to the story, rather than dissecting it line by line. Short stories are the most valuable to me because it allows me to hide meaning, without it being drowned out by heavy language and metaphors.

    ReplyDelete
  40. 1. Memory
    2. Setting
    3. Conflict
    4. Sound and rhythm
I think the first technique is most important to my work. I write best when I use my own memory or an event that happened to me, because then I can write about it on a more personal level and have a deeper connection. It’s more meaningful and I do my best work when I can write about something that I’ve experienced, and when I can give super specific details. But sometimes I like to use my memories and add in fictional aspects to it. That way I can still use my creativity, but since it’s something I’ve experienced its both fictional and nonfictional.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I would write a journal entry because I feel like that is the type of writing that I am most comfortable with. If I were to try and accumulate more ideas together I would want to write freely about what I'm thinking about, and I think that writing a journal entry is the closest to free writing as possible. I can be very specific when writing too, and this matches best with the journal entry option.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I find 2 to be the most important technique because it’s important to establish a strong setting and storyline amongst characters in a story. Using these details to build a story allows the readers to imagine the scene they’re reading while relating to the characters as they go through conflict and/or change.

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1.Memory
    2.Journal Entry
    3. Confronting Character
    4. Poem
The first bullet best suits what most of my writing is. I am able to put my all into a listen and learn writing pieces. I like telling my stories and I want my stories to help other people. Hearing someone that might possibly be going or had already went through it, was refreshing almost and helped me a lot as a kid. Growing up, I always read stories that had a character go through a experience, learn and reflect at the end. It has taught me we go what we go through for a reason.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 1. Creative nonfiction is the technique most important to my writing. When I write, I tend to write about personal feelings, ideas, or convictions. I tend to only write about things that are relevant to me and I stay well in my comfort zone. Writing about myself in a memoir of sorts calls for self-awareness and being able to reflect on their past decisions and choices is easy for me to expand on.
    2. Short Stories are fun to write about as I can make up whatever story I want to write about it. It can be difficult for me to come up with creative ideas so I do struggle with this technique.
    3. Plays are unique and interesting to write when you have an idea for a story in your head. However, they can be difficult when it comes to making sure everything written in the dialogue is for a purpose to keep the audience or reader hooked.
    4. Poems are the hardest for me to write because I struggle to rhyme and form cohesive thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  45. 1) Short story
    2) Play
    3) Poem
    4) Memoir
I put story as my most important because to me personally its more important to have a story with good characters and a good setting as it is easier to create a conflict between characters than to make the compelling characters to begin with. The least important I put was the memoir as it is important but a story should always move forward rather than back.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 1. personal essay
    2. short story
    3. play
    4. poem
I find it easier to write about things that are tangible to me. I like to write about real world experiences that make people feel a sort of way. Having the reader be able to feel and grasp what is going on in a piece of writing is important to me. I find poetry a little to abstract, I prefer direct text over figurative language.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think a memoir or personal essay is the best development technique for my work. Most of what I have written this semester has aspects or examples of my personal experiences incorporated into it. I find it easiest for me and that I write better when I have personal knowledge of a situation or experience because I can add the details that enhance the story for the reader.

    ReplyDelete
  48. 1. Memory or personal essay
    2. Strong setting
    3. Conflict
    4. Sound and rhythm of language
I create my best writing when I am able to draw from my own experiences. It allows me to give my own perspective as well as explore different perspectives. Writing in a personal essay style allows me to create strong feelings related to my own experiences.

    ReplyDelete
  49. 1. memoir
    2. Short story
    3. poem
    4. play
I'd say that writing about a memory or event is most important to me because thats what comes easiest to me. I also believe that writing about events or moments in your past are important to write about and remember.

    ReplyDelete
  50. 1. Memoir/Personal essay: It is easy for me to talk about the memories that happen in my life because I experienced them so I know the most details about that
    2. Journal entry with a strong setting, with characters who engage each other in action and dialogue: I feel like the setting plays a strong role in any story and can set up the conflict. Setting matters because it sets the tone for the entire story.
    3. Play; characters who confront each other in dialogue: Conflict is important but setting can be the thing that causes the conflict.
    4. Poem; if the sound and rhythm of the language seem integral to the thought: I am not good at being creative when referring to poems because I feel like I have so much too say to put it into a poem form.

  51. Ranks
#1- (1)- I feel like 1 is number 1 because when you write you need to write about ideas that matters to you if you didn’t then I feel like that the draft wouldn’t be as good.
#2-(3)- I feel like the 3rd on is #2 because of the main fact that it talks about imagery and imagery is pretty important when talking about your thoughts
#3-(2)- I think that the 2nd one is #3 because of the main fact that because seating does matter but dialogue isn’t always going to happen in some drafts.
#4-(4)- I feel like The 4th one is #4 because of the main fact that like I said you wont have dialogue in every draft because you could be talking about you and no one else is involved In your draft.

    ReplyDelete
  52. 1 - a memoir - easy to talk about something that has already happened and that you have already reflected on
2 - A play - dialogue can be easy to write out since its how we talk
3- short story - setting can be easy to explain and identify but only when a lot is happening
4 - poem - poems are overall difficult and hard to understand let alone write my own.

    ReplyDelete
  53. 1, is most important for my work because I feel that best work comes from when I am writing about a memory or feeling I had. When I write about something that I experienced I don't have to try and make up feelings because I already went through it, and I know what it feels like. It is also very helpful to you as a writer because you are able to fully reflect on the situation, and that can help your writing as well. (1,4,2,3)

    ReplyDelete
  54. I identify with the first one the most. Normally when I am writing, it is almost always a reflection of an event from my personal life. I think it is the easiest for me to write about a memory cause it can unlock greater details about what I am trying to write about. My least favorite is rhythm. Rhythm deals with writing poems which I do not necessarily enjoy doing.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Memoir/personal essay sounds right for me. I think my writing often includes reflection, especially of past events and lessons learned. I am a very reflective person in general and I often reflect and expand on things that are going on in my life every day. I also like this technique because it allows me to both state my ideas and illustrate. I tend to go back and forth between the two. I also think I am best at writing in my own POV because I can understand it more than trying to understand other's POV.

    ReplyDelete
  56. 1. memory or event (personal essay)
    2. journal entry (short story)
    3. character who confront each other (a play)
    4. sound and rhythm (a poem)

I think that a memory or event (personal essay) is the most important to me because it is the form of writing that I use the most and feel the most comfortable and confident in writing. I think that this one is the most important because it is the least difficult for me to write. I am not the best writer, but I am very good at tapping into my own emotions and a personal essay is a great form of expression for me to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  57. 1. Memoir or personal essay: I love things that are real and personal because I tend to listen and learn from those type of writings and TV shows/movies.
    2. Short Story: I would like to develop my skills more on this because I think when a short stories are written correctly, they are so fun and can really lean a lot from them.
    3. Play: I like good plays but I need to develop my play writing because I need to work on the characters creating a bigger and better conflict.
    4. Poem: I like poems because they really make you critically think and try to make you think deeper into the writing and that's something I would like to become better at.

    ReplyDelete
  58. 1. memory (personal essay)
    2. journal entry (short story)
    3. sound and rhythm (poem)
    4. characters confronting each other (a play)
    - 1 is the most important to me because i think this is often the style i have always wrote the most frequently in since i was young. I am most comfortable with this style of writing and everything that i write stems from something that i have seen or gone through before.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ranking:
    1, 3, 2, 4
The development technique most important to me is creative nonfiction. I believe that this is the most important technique for my work because I usually do not write using dialogue. I like to develop stories with the purpose of conveying a lesson, idea, or a reflection. I like to focus on one main point or several, ultimately allowing the reader to develop a good understanding of my work. I want the reader to think deeply or challenge their previous thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  60. The most important to me would be the forming of a poem, the 3rd bullet point. That is where most of my writing ends up at. Then I would rank 2nd as the personal essay, then the play, then short story. The forming a poem technique is most important to me because I struggle with words and vocalizing my ideas. With a poem, my ideas can cluster and I can go back to make sense of it. The small details in a poem can make a big difference in the interpretation of the writing and can help with understanding different or dificult parts of the piece.

    ReplyDelete
  61. The most important development technique to my writing is writing from a memory or event from my life to spark a personal essay. I think writing from personal experience helps me add more emotion and get more into the writing than other genres. I believe I'll have more to say and feel more comfortable writing when I can write from an experience I had. The least important to me is writing a play because I believe it calls for more on the spot decision making when it comes to their dialogue which to me seems a bit messy. I don't like reading or watching plays, so writing one doesn't spark my interest either.

    ReplyDelete
  62. In my work, I think the second bullet point is the most important to my work. Setting up a short story with a good, developed setting is a good way to draw the reader in. When I am reading, I prefer whatever Im reading to interest me from the beginning or else I see no point in reading it. It is hard to be good at writing settings but once someone develops that skill, it can make or break the story. Good authors that I like to read usually make the setting the number one focus point and make it descriptive. Using descriptive words to lead the reader in to read is good.

    ReplyDelete
  63. My first writing was a bit more abstract. I think my approach was just focused differently. The first time I focused on the overall picture, and the second time I focused on the parts. We have learned a lot about different aspects of writing and breaking them down into pieces. The same thing can be written about from thousands of view points.

    ReplyDelete
  64. My ranking is 2,4,1,3. While flow and rhythm are an integral part of my writing, I tend to care more about flushing out characters, setting, and dialogue. I love writing short stories, because they really help me focus my writing, without writing too much. Proofreading to make sure I have not written too much is an essential part of my writing process.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Betty Lundal:
    short story, play, memoir, poem
A short story would be most important to how I write as I am the most connected with that kind of writing, I really enjoy writing and telling stories that aren't super long
