  1. I think exceptional writing is writing that is engaging, and not boring. I don’t think writing has to be proper or polished to be exceptional; it just has to be interesting and transporting to the reader, which is subjective to every pair of eyes. I think an exceptional final portfolio would contain writing like this, but I think it would also be a show of the progress made in the course. I think when considering a grade for the final portfolio, old writings of the student must be read to observe a difference or progression, if any, in the student’s writing style, depth, and quality. Other things to consider would be proof of concept implementation, or in other words, showing that they understood a topic covered in the course and it appears in their final portfolio. This could be structure in a nonfiction text, character development, setting creation, poetry styles, use of the senses, imagery use, etc.

  2. I believe that exceptional writing is writing that is full of personal thoughts and feelings. Creative writing should never have to be composed to look a certain way or sound like a certain thing. Exceptional writing shows character and personality. It also displays true elements of an individual and what they like to portray within their writing. I also think exceptional writing shows variety and diversity. I think a final portfolio would be considered exceptional based on each individual person as it will look different for everyone. Creative writing is an area that doesn't get defined by a certain look or tone. Just allowing your thoughts and emotions to be displayed within your portfolio giving depth and detail as to who you are would really provide a good final portfolio.

  3. Exceptional writing is more than grammatical sentencing. It has depth, shows emotion, and reels the reader into wanting to hear more. It could also leave the reader open to their own conclusions. Details in the writing help not only tell a story but show you where it is. The plot is more than words written on a page, it can be visualized. Close your eyes and you’ll see the waves crashing violently like tiles for a Jenga game. Or you can see the luscious, spiraling pine trees as they emulate the smell of Ihop and hear the crunch of the snow as your breath fogs up your glasses and your coffee warms your hands.

  4. What qualities do you believe make exceptional writing?
It is definitely a challenge to put a grade on someone’s work. I think all writing is exceptional writing. Those who think out their responses, put some heart into their words, make meaningful moments through the crafting of sentences. These things can help bring good writing up to great writing.

What would make a final portfolio exceptional- 100%?
The most basic answer is to be creative. If you are telling a story about your friend, get creative with how to portray them. A 100% would be organized and well put together, thought out, not thrown together, it would be cohesive and easy to read.

  5. I believe that exceptional writing is writing that paints a picture inside the readers head. Exceptional writing is able to grasp the reader’s attention from the very beginning until the final sentence. It is writing that allows the writer to freely express their thoughts and feelings through a series of connections. Exceptional writing is not defined by the length of the work but by the quality of its content. In order to obtain a 100% on the final portfolio one’s work would have to be original, creative and intentional. The work must speak for itself and show that the writer has grown over the course of the semester.

  8. I think what would make an exceptional writing is writing that evokes thought and emotion. People tend to relate more whenever they are able to experience an emotion while reading one's writing. Also if someone is able to think about your writing even when they are done reading, that would make an exceptional writing. Something that engages the reader from start to finish, where they don’t get lost in the middle and give up trying to understand your writing.
Something that would make the portfolio a 100 would be one where you are able to see the growth of the student. Where they started in their writing journey versus where they are now. Also a portfolio that shows many different writing styles like incorporating non-fiction, poetry and fiction. That shows the writers versatility.
